David Shutt passes away
Liberal Democrat peer, democracy campaigner and friend to so many, Lord David Shutt has passed away.
We are desperately sad to say that our former Chief Whip, David Shutt, passed away yesterday evening after a short illness. A proud Yorkshireman, a committed Liberal and a huge part of both the Liberal Party, and then the Liberal Democrats, for decades. We shall miss him so much. pic.twitter.com/6otULEql2U

Seven times a Parliamentary candidate, he became a life peer in 2000 and was the Liberal Democrat Chief Whip in the House of Lords between 2005 and 2012.
Incredibly sad news that Lord David Shutt has passed away. Former Lib Dem Cllr, Mayor of Calderdale, a formidable character in the House of Lords and instrumental in the setting up of @CalderdaleFound. Thoughts are with his wife, family and friends. He was Calderdale to his core.

This is such a fitting tribute to Lord David Shutt, a man who made such a great contribution to the democratic life of the UK. His last contribution to the Lords – moving a successful amendment to improve electoral registration rates among young people https://t.co/QnTfmtXyMs

So sad, #DavidShutt was such a straight talker who made sure the Liberal voice was heard in the Lords 🙁

We're deeply saddened to learn about the death of our former trustee, David Shutt. David was a trustee from 1986-2010 and was heavily involved in our grant-making on democracy, in Northern Ireland and in Ireland. He was a remarkable man who made a huge contribution to our work. pic.twitter.com/eo6l8WleMJ

Love and sympathies to his wife, Margaret, family and many friends.
Lord Shutt was always the same. Welcoming, polite, willing to listen. He was a wonderful man and it is really sad to learn of his passing. Thank you for being such a good friend.
I remember the time David Shutt came across from Yorkshire to help us in the General Election in Manchester. He was a very gracious man, and it was a pleasure canvassing with him.
He will be missed.
He was also a Quaker.
